Abstract

Tujuan dari karya tulis ini adalah untuk menganalisa buku yang telah diterbitkan di pasaran. Penulis menganalisa sebuah buku yang berjudul “Percakapan Bahasa Mandarin Sehari-hari.” Penulis mendapatkan beberapa kesalahan pada buku tersebut. Kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut dapat diklasifikasikan menjadi 3 macam, yaitu 1. fonetik, 2. karakter Mandarin, dan 3. tata bahasa. Kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut dianalisa berdasarkan teori-teori yang ada. Penulis berharap tidak ada kesalahan lagi terhadap buku yang diterbitkan untuk pembelajaran bahasa Mandarin, sehingga pembelajar bahasa Mandarin dapat belajar bahasa Mandarin dengan baik dan benar. Kata kunci: kesalahan, koreksi, fonetik, karakter Mandarin, tata bahasa.

Abstract

Kinneavy (1971:23) states that “since pragmatics is viewed as the study of complete discourse, it does not include semantics as such or syntactic as such. These two constitute linguistics, and linguistic analysis is not discourse analysis, though, of course, it can contribute to the understanding of discourse, consequently, syntactic and semantics are beyond the borders of discourse study”. Cook (1990:12) also separates linguistics from discourse analysis. Linguistics is said to be without context or context-free. He further says that semantics is context-free. This paper is to argue that both sentence linguistics and semantics are context sensitive. From the point of view of language acquisition, the syntactic structures word meaning, sentence meaning and knowledge of the world that an informant later uses to produce language, are all based on context and are derived from context. Accordingly, sentence linguistics and semantics are context-sensitive. Key Words: pragmatics, linguistics semantics, context-sensitive

Abstract

This study focused on the washback effects of classroom tests administered in Junior High School in Indonesian EFL contexts. To obtain the expected data two sets of questionnaires were delivered to the teachers and the students of Junior High schools in Surabaya, Indonesia. Likert scales were used to measure the obtained data. The study revealed that both teachers and students tried hard to prepare classroom tests. Passing classroom tests seemed to be the priority rather than the learning objectives themselves. Exercises for classroom test were therefore mostly given to the students. The materials learned by the students were mostly those students believed or predicted to be the materials for the tests. To some extents thus classroom tests may have both negative as well as positive effects Key Words: Washback Effect, Classroom Tests, Necessary and Unnecessary Decisions.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was peculiarly to provide pocket book as one media that can be used to improve English conversation and guiding skill for pedicab drivers and shopkeeper at batik tourism village of Laweyan Surakarta which include: 1) how to make a conversation, and 2) how to guide. Generally, it aimed to (1) develop the instruments of linguists’ test covering a) material design, b) linguist, c) tourism, and d) translation expert. (2) Carry out revision test, and (3) developing the final product of pocket book. This research was namely Research and Development (R & D). This research was done in developing product. Need analysis has become the basic instrument for the researcher in developing pocket book. Besides, theoretical and empirical study has helped the researcher to decide former pocket book design. The steps of the research covered 5 steps: 1) Former product analysis; 2) Developing former product; 3) expert validation and revision; 4) small-scale test and revision; 5) large-scale test and final froduct. Based on the research, it can be concluded that the using of pocket book was effective to improve the communication ability of the pedicab driver and shopkeeper at batik tourism village of Laweyan Surakarta The pocket book could help increasing the life-quality in case of finance, knowledge, and ethics for the pedicab driver snd shopkeeper in facing the foreign tourist. Abstract

The objective of the research is “ To know the improvement of the students’ ability in translating through analyzing English word equivalent into Indonesian. This research used A Classroom Action Research (CAR). It had conducted two cycles; each cycle consisted of four meetings. A number of subjects of the research were 28 students. The researcher took real data from the school to know the students’ translating text achievement. The instruments of this research were translating test and observation sheet in cycle I and in cycle II. The research findings indicated that the through analyzing on English Words equivalents into Indonesian increased studensts’ translating text ability. It was indicated that there was an increased of the students’ translating text ability achievement from cycle I to cycle II. The students’ test of translating text ability achievement was after giving action by using the analyzing on English Words equivalents into Indonesian indicated that there was a significant increase from cycle I and from that to cycle II. The students’ translating text achievement in cycle I was 61.20 and in cycle II became 73.78 and it is classified as good. While the standard target achievement 70% one which was categorized good. From these findings, there was a significant increase of the students’ translating ability achievement through the analyzing on English Words equivalents into Indonesian. Abstract

One of the 21st century challenges is effective oral communication. While at the same time, some senior high school students are considered to be inept to speak English fluently. Their shortcomings in speaking belong to area of pragmatics. This study was intended to evaluate an English course book for senior high school entitled Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA Kelas XI Semester 1 that is widely used by most senior high schools in Surabaya. Based on those rationales, this study investigated Bahasa Inggris untuk SMA/MA Kelas XI Semester 1 to find out what language function is taught and how the language function is delivered as reflected by the four pragmatic features in the speaking sections in the course book under study. The result of the study found first that there were all 8 language functions that were under transactional and interpersonal functions as demanded by the Curriculum 2006 but they were not presented in sequence as what the Curriculum 2006 demanded. Second, that all the four pragmatic features: context, the cooperative principles, and speech acts and politeness were found in the speaking sections and yet two characteristics in Speech Acts were not found. 5 items in Speech Acts and Politeness were not found as well. The arrangement of the four pragmatic features were provided moderately and mostly implied while they should be provided explicitly. Abstract

This study aims to investigate whether the English listening strategies had the effect to English listening comprehension and also to see whether or not the application of the metacognitive listening strategies would produce higher English listening comprehension compared to the using of the cognitive listening strategies. In order to study this relationship, 60 (sixty) students of Deck Department in Politeknik Pelayaran Surabaya (Surabaya Merchant Marine Polytechnic) were choosen randomly and surveyed with thirty two structured questionnaires and a TOEIC listening test. The questionnaire was about a Listening strategy use developed by Lee (1997) and modified by Ho (2006) and also based on Vandergrift’s (1997, 2003) cognitive and metacognitive listening strategy classification. Statistical analysis of Linear Regression analysis, One-way Annova, Multiple regression analysis of Tukey HSD and Homogeneous subset test were used to know whether metacognitive listening strategies would give higher listening comprehension than cognitive listening strategies and also to see that metacognitive listening strategy would give more influence in listening comprehension that the cognitive listening strategies. The result indicated that the students who work with metacognitive listening strategies did not achieve better English listening comprehension than those who work with cognitive listening strategies and there was no effect in using the metacognitive and cognitive listening strategies in English listening comprehension.
